Pro-AL panel sweeps Cuta polls

Awami League-backed 'yellow' panel bagged nine posts while BNP-Jamaat-backed 'white' panel won two, including the post of president, in the Chittagong University Teachers' Association (Cuta) election yesterday. White panel's Prof Dr Mozaffor Ahmad Chowdhury of Philosophy department was elected president securing 277 votes while the rival Prof Benu Kumar Dey of Chemistry department got 274 votes, election commission sources said. Yellow panel candidate Associate Prof Mohammad Ali Asgar Chowdhury of Journalism department was elected general secretary by defeating white panel's candidate Associate Prof Sheikh Bakhtear Uddin of Botany department by 54 votes. Ali Asgar got 303 votes. Prof Muhammed Muazzem Hossain of Management Studies and Lecturer Rabiul Hasan Bhuiyan of Bio-chemistry and Molecular Biology department were elected vice-president and joint secretary respectively from the yellow panel and Associate Prof Saiful Islam of Economics department was elected treasurer from the white panel. Members elected from the yellow panel who won the polls are Dr Md Mahbubur Rahman of Botany, Dr Jorin Akhter of Institute of Forestry and Environmental Sciences, Mohammad Shahid Ullah of Communication and Journalism, Siraj-ud-Doula of Public Administration, Shyamol Ranjan Chakraborty of Physics and Prof Jibon Chandra Pal of Statistics department. A total of 572 voters out of 667 cast their votes in the polling held at the auditorium of Social Science faculty yesterday from 9:00am to 1:30pm.
