Pond Filling
Lalmohon pourasava defies HC order
Defying a High Court order, the Lalmohon municipality authorities in Bhola have been allegedly constructing structures filling up a century-old pond in government land.
On January 8, the HC directed the authorities to maintain status quo restricting filling up and encroachment of the pond and constructing structures there for three months.
The court also issued a rule upon the authorities to explain why they should not be directed to remove and demolish all the structures from the land of the pond.
The order and rule came after environmentalist organisation, Save the Environment Movement, had filed a petition as public interest litigation.
The pourasava authorities are illegally continuing construction of structures on the pond, which is similar to contempt of court, a press release of the organisation said yesterday.
Petitioner's counsel Manzill Murshid said the municipality administration is violating the HC order by constructing structures on the pond.
Contacted, Lalmohon Pourasava Mayor Emdadul Haque Tuhin said they have not received any order from the HC.
“We have almost constructed a supermarket on the pond as per an instruction of the land ministry”. He said the construction will stop if they get the High Court order.
