A 29-year-old Tajharul Islam gets emotional while expressing his feelings on getting back his eyesight. “Like a new life, my feeling is just inexplicable,” he said on a private television channel yesterday. Veteran freedom fighter and journalist Faiz Ahmed, who passed away on Monday, brought back Tajharul's eyesight by donating his corneas posthumously. Saiful Islam Chowdhury, coordinator of Sandhani Jatiya Chakkhu Dan Samity, an organisation that helps the blind with donated corneas, said Tajharul's eyesight was getting so poor that he was gradually becoming blind. Sandhani Chakkhu Hospital successfully transplanted Faiz's cornea in Tajharul's eye on Monday, he said, adding that the remaining cornea would be donated to some other patient today. Tajharul completed BSC Engineering from Rajshahi University of Engineering and Technology and is now serving at a private firm in the capital, he added. In accordance with Faiz Ahmed's wishes, his eyes were donated to the organisation while the body was donated to Bangladesh Medical College. The litterateur and veteran member of the Communist Party of Bangladesh breathed his last at a city hospital on Monday at the age of 84.
