HC summons Raninagar OC, four others
The High Court yesterday summoned the officer-in-charge (OC) of Raninagar Police Station in Naogaon and four others before it in connection with an incident of the lashing a housewife on the charge of an extramarital affair on her part.
The OC of Raninagar Police Station Shahriar Khan, local madrasa teacher Noor Alam and arbitrators Azizul Haque, Mofazzal Hossain and Afzal Hossain were directed to appear before the HC on March 1 to explain their roles in the incident.
The daily Prothom Alo yesterday published a report stating that a housewife and a friend of her husband were lashed 101 times and fined Tk 5,000 at a village arbitration at Raninagar Upazila of Naogaon on Friday.
They were punished after arbitrator Afzal brought allegation of their extramarital relationship, the report said, adding that Shahriar did not take any action over the incident.
The HC bench of Justice AHM Shamsuddin Choudhury Manik and Justice Jahangir Hossain Selim yesterday came up with order after Supreme Court lawyers Sheikh Ali Ahmed Khokon and Abantee Nurul placed the report before it.
Deputy Attorney General ABM Altaf Hossain represented the government.
