Keep confidence in e-voting

EU official urges BNP

The main opposition BNP should keep confidence in the electronic voting system in Bangladesh since there is no possibility of vote rigging under this system, said a spokesperson of European Commission. Pedro Serrano de Haro, director for South Asia and South East Asia of the European Commission's External Action Service, said this at a meeting with the leaders of the ruling Awami League chapters in the European countries. The European Union (EU) official also expressed satisfaction over the advancement of the voting system in Bangladesh and praised Bangladesh for practicing democracy, said a press release of EU AL. The AL leaders, at the meeting held at EU Commission's headquarter in Belgium on Thursday, discussed on three crucial issues -- war crimes trial, cancellation of the caretaker government system, and strengthening of Election Commission (EC) in Bangladesh -- with the EU officials. The leaders led by Belgium AL President Bazlur Rashid Bulu said the trial of war criminals is a national demand for Bangladesh. They said the caretaker government has been nullified in line with the Supreme Court verdict and the EC is completely independent and strengthened to hold impartial elections in the country. They also said the government is showing zero tolerance to militancy and that is why the country did not see any bomb blast in the last three years. Dr Genoveva Hernandez Uriz, desk officer for Bangladesh of the EU Commission, and AL leaders Monir Hossain Palin, Jayoti Rani Pal, Mahfuzur Rahman, Abdul Kuddus, Hasnat Miah, Abdus Salam Bhuiyan, Abdul Matin, Sayeed Faruk, Mostafa Zaman Bachchu and Linkon Mollah also attended the meeting.
