BNP-Jamaat backed panel wins polls

BNP-Jamaat backed Jatiyatabadi Ainjibi Oikya (blue panel) dominated the Dhaka Bar Association elections held on February 22 and 23. According to the results announced yesterday, the BNP-Jamaat backed candidates won 15 posts while Awami League backed Sammilita Ainjibi Samannay Parishad (white panel) secured the remaining 10 posts. Among a total of 12,051 voters some 6,951 voters cast their votes in the elections for the 2012-2013 term. Mohammad Borhan Uddin of blue panel was elected president by defeating his rival Kazi Najibullah Hiru. Borhan received 3,466 votes while Hiru got 3,349 votes. White panel's Mohammad Ali Hossain was elected general secretary with 4,047 votes. He defeated his adversary Khorshed Mia Alam by 2,828 votes. From the BNP-Jamaat backed panel, Mohammad Mohsin was elected treasurer, Mohammad Moeen Uddin assistant general secretary, Mohammad Shoayeb Mia library secretary, Syeda Shahin Ara Laily cultural secretary and Mohammad Ershadul Alam Jorge office secretary. From the AL backed panel, Khandaker Abul Kashem was elected senior vice-president, Mohammad Abdur Razzak Mia vice president, and Motiur Rahman Bhuiyan senior assistant general secretary. From BNP-Jammat alliance government, ABM Arif Billah, Gyanda Prasad Das, Mohammad Abdul Malek, Afanur Rahman Rubel, Ehsan Labib Jakob, Tofazzal Hossain, Nasima Akhter, Runa Iqbal and Simki Imam Khan were elected executive members. While from the other panel newly elected executive members are -- Kazi Helal Uddin, Khodeza Sultana Mita, Mahmuda Akhter Poly, Jahnagir Alam, Mazharul Haque and Mahfuzur Rahman Chowdhury. Advocate Enayet Hossain Khan conducted the elections.
