Expressing concern over the “gradual decline of the sense of values from society”, former adviser to a caretaker government Syed Manzoor-e-Elahi yesterday said only good schooling can grow this sense among students at an early stage. “People now do not give up their seats for elders. Sense of values is disappearing from society, which is a great loss,” he said, adding that he is proud to be a student of St Xavier's College where he learnt about such values. He was addressing a reunion of St Xavier's College (Calcutta) Alumni Association, Bangladesh Chapter in the city's Gulshan Club where around 60 members of the association including 29 former students from Kolkata were present. Bangladesh is the 5th chapter of the association following Singapore, United Kingdom, Thailand and Dubai. “Today is a golden day. We have been waiting for this day over a long time,” said the college Principal Father Felix Raj. Mentioning that the college's admission process has become more competitive, he said the college plans to exchange students with Dhaka's Notre Dame College. He also sought cooperation from the association members in setting up a campus of the college in Bangladesh. The association Secretary Ferdausal Hasan and Kingshuk Nag were present.
