'Railway to be made safest mode of transport'
Railways would be made the most dependable and safest mode of transport, said Railway Minister Suranjit Sengupta yesterday.
We have started taking measures to this end, he said adding, railways would be made passenger-friendly and turned into a trusted concern.
He said this at a view exchange meeting with leading people and government officials at the Habiganj Deputy Commissioner's conference room.
Some local leaders alleged that railway lands worth crores of taka have been grabbed by some locals in Habiganj.
The minister said none would be allowed to occupy railway lands and that drives are being launched to recover the grabbed lands.
If the Habiganj people demand, steps would be taken to resume train service on the Habiganj-Shaistaganj and Shaistaganj-Bulla branch lines, which were shut 15 years ago, he added.
Deputy Commissioner Mahmud Hasan chaired the meeting while lawmakers Abdul Mazid Khan and Abu Zaher, AL central Organising Secretary Misbah Uddin Siraj, Habiganj Zilla Parishad Administrator Dr Mushfique Hossain Chowdhury, Habiganj Chamber President Alamgir Chowdhury, District Bar Association President Alamgir Bhuiyan Babul and Press Club President Harun-Ur-Rashid Chowdhury spoke among others.
