Former cop jailed for taking bribe
A Chittagong court yesterday sentenced a former police officer of Bayezid Police Station in the port city to two years' rigorous imprisonment for taking bribe.
The judge of Chittagong Divisional Special Court also fined Md Nabi Ullah, former sub-inspector of Bayezid Police Station, Tk 10 thousand and in default he has to suffer three more years behind bars, said court sources.
Md Nabi Ullah is accused in a case for asking bribe from a woman of Jalalabad area on August 9 of 2008.
The victim Keya Kabir filed the case on the day with Bayezid Police Station.
According to the case statement, Nabi demanded Tk 2 lakh and a motorcycle as bribe from Keya after she went to the police station to seek help in freeing her land from illegal occupiers.
She then informed the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) and on their advice she agreed to give the bribe, said court sources adding that Nabi was caught red-handed when taking the bribe.
After an investigation carried out by the ACC, Zahangir Alam, assistant director of ACC, gave the charge sheet against Nabi on December 31 in 2008, said Mahamudul Alam, special public prosecutor.
