JU teachers start fresh agitation today
A group of Jahangirnagar University (JU) teachers yesterday announced a five-day fresh agitation programme, including laying siege to the registrar building and holding rally on the campus to meet their demand.
Prof Nasim Akhter Hossain, spokesperson of the teachers' platform named 'Shikkhak Samaj', announced the programme at a press conference at Jahangirnagar University Journalists' Association office.
The programme begins today with a mass campaign against alleged irregularities of the university administration. The teachers will set up a "mass complaint centre" for lodging complains against the JU authorities on March 6 and hold a rally in front of the registrar building on March 8.
They will meet the university registrar on March 9 and lay siege to the registrar building on March 10.
“We are going for the fresh programme as the university authorities have broken promises,” said Nasim Akhter adding, “We have tried to reach an understanding with the university administration but failed.”
The agitating teachers will continue their protest until the university administration meets their all demands, she added.
The teachers have been demonstrating on the campus to meet their several demands, including formation of a judicial probe committee to investigate the Zubair murder and punishment to former proctor Prof Arzu Miah for his alleged attack on the university teachers' association president.
Zubair Ahmed, a fourth year English department student of the university, succumbed to his injuries following an attack on him by a group of Bangladesh Chhatra League activists on January 9.
Other demands include election for the vice-chancellor post, formation of a probe committee to find out the reason behind the criminal activities on the campus and stopping "mass appointment of teachers" in the university.
Meanwhile, the university authorities have expelled 13 students for different terms for their alleged involvement in the Zubair murder and almost all members of the proctorial body led by the former proctor have resigned over the demands of the agitating teachers.
