BDR Carnage Trial

Court finds no merit in three witnesses

A Dhaka court trying the accused in the BDR carnage case yesterday said it found no merit in the depositions given by three witnesses to the massacre in Pilkhana headquarters of BDR on February 25-26, 2009. The Metropolitan Sessions Judge's court made the observation after two of the three witnesses testified yesterday without mentioning anything about murder and the remaining witness said he saw a bullet-hit body during the carnage. “What about the killings? One is saying that the accused dragged an officer by her hair...another is saying that he saw mutineers firing…it will not be worthwhile,” said Judge Zohurul Haque. The depositions were too weak to prove murder. “What will your answer be when the accused will be proven naïve and ask you why they were put in jail?” said the court. However, Prosecutor Mosharraf Hossain Kajol told the court, “The testimonies are important to understand circumstances.” It is difficult to find the killers as Pilkhana is an open place, he said, requesting the court to record the depositions. The witnesses, havildars AKM Sharifuddin Kaysar and Shafiquzzaman and cook Jalal Hossain, gave their depositions against 28 accused yesterday.
