JU teachers confine registrar to office
A group of Jahangirnagar University teachers yesterday kept the registrar confined to his office for around two hours, demanding an immediate stop to “improper recruitment of teachers”.
They also called for a judicial probe into Zubair killing and a halt to “irregularities and mismanagement” in the JU administration.
The agitating teachers claimed that Registrar Abu Bakar Siddique had admitted to them that there were some irregularities. They said his admission came at a meeting with them.
However, talking to The Daily Star later in the day, the registrar said the claim was not true. “I disagreed with their allegations when they asked me about the issue. I think there are no irregularities here,” he added.
The teachers demonstrating under the banner of “Shikkhak Samaj” claim the administration has recruited around 200 teachers in the last three years without following a due process.
Yesterday morning, a delegation of teachers met the registrar at his office to discuss their demands. They pressed him for an assurance that the administration would stop the “wholesale recruitment of teachers”.
As the registrar declined to give such assurance, the teachers forced him to stay confined to his office for around two hours till 1:00pm.
JU Teachers Association President AA Mamun, Secretary General Dr Sharif Uddin, Prof MA Matin and Manos Chowdhury, among others, were in the delegation.
