Price of gas and its wastage

R. D. Qureshi, Uttara, Dhaka
The Adviser to the Prime Minister Dr. Tawfiq e Elahi Chowdhury announced the other day that the domestic users are wasting gas as they get it cheap. He also declared that the price of gas is going to be increased to stop wastages. Reportedly, the price is going to be fixed at taka 1000 per month for a double-burner cooker in place of taka 450 per month. It is not understandable as to how could the users be compelled to stop misuse of gas by fixing a user within per month rate system instead of increasing the per unit price for gas burnt. The idea appears to be silly. If the gas price is fixed at per user per month, the people who generally do not waste gas and electricity may get frustrated over this unwise and unsympathetic move of the government. The users may give up keeping a watch on gas wastages. In such case, if the gas users keep burning their gas for 24 hours, won't be the situation even worse? Inside the gate of my house at Uttara (22, Jasimuddin Avenue, Sector 3), Titas Gas Company installed a Gas Metre several years back. No one ever came to my house to take a reading for the purpose of billing me for actual use of gas. I am paying for the burners of the two floors of my house at Tk.450 per month same as before. What a wastage Titas Gas incurred in installing that Gas Metre!
