A worker died after falling from an under-construction building in the city's Rampura yesterday. Abdul Kader, a co-worker of the dead, said no measures had been taken in the seven-storey building to ensure workers' safety. He said seventeen-year-old Zahurul Islam fell from the fifth floor when he was working with three others on a makeshift bamboo stage outside the building at block D, road 3, Banashree in Rampura. With severe injuries, he was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where around 5:30pm doctors declared him dead. Zahurul was from Chapainawabganj and had been working there for about a month, said Kader. Delwar Hossain Khan, officer-in-charge of Rampura Police Station, told The Daily Star that he had sent a police team to the spot to investigate the incident. A case would be filed against the building authority if police found any negligence in ensuring workers' safety, the OC said. Safety and Rights Society, a non-government organisation that works to ensure safety and rights of workers, in a report last year said the highest number of workers, which was 183, died that year at different construction sites.
