'Unite for speedy war crimes trial'
Independence Day was celebrated in Rajshahi, Rajshahi University (RU), and Chittagong University (CU) yesterday with a call for remaining united to ensure speedy trial of war criminals.
Staff Correspondent from Rajshahi reports: The day's programmes began with a 21-gun salute in Rajshahi Police Lines at zero hour.
The district administration in the morning organised different programmes including march-past and discussion. Different political parties and socio-cultural organisations held discussions and cultural functions to celebrate the day.
Rajshahi Mayor AHM Khairuzzaman Liton led a huge rally of Awami League and placed wreaths at portraits of four national leaders while the city BNP President Mizanur Rahman Minu led the BNP rally in the night.
RU Correspondent adds: To mark the day, RU authorities hoisted black flags on the top of the administrative building, vice-chancellor's (VC) residence, central library and residential halls on the campus.
Teachers and officials of the university, led by its VC Prof Abdus Sobhan, brought out a procession on the campus from in front of the university senate building and placed floral wreaths at the university Shaheed Miner and mass grave.
The university authorities also organised a discussion and a cultural programme at Kazi Nazrul Islam auditorium.
RU residential hall authorities, teachers' association, Progressive Teachers Society, RU Journalists' Association, officers' association, Kendryo Sangskritik Jote, left-leaning students' organisations, Bangladesh Chhatra League, and different socio-cultural organisations also brought out procession and placed wreaths on the basement of the university Shaheed Miner.
The university martyrs' memorial museum remained open for visitors from 7:00am to 5:00pm.
CU Correspondent adds: The day's programmes began with placing wreaths at the university's ''Swadhinatar Swarak Vashkarjo'' (sculpture commemorating independence) at 8:00am by Vice-Chancellor Prof Md Anwarul Azim Arif.
Pro-VC Prof Mohammad Alauddin, CU Teachers Association, deans of various faculties, provosts of halls, and various student and cultural organisations also placed wreaths at the sculpture.
The university authorities organised discussion and cultural programmes marking the day.
