The family members of a 25-year-old youth who was killed in a “shootout” with police in the city's Mirpur Zoo area on Sunday night claimed that the business rivals of the victim's elder brother got him killed by police. Hobi Miah, younger brother of the deceased Masud Miah, came to Dhaka Medical College Hospital morgue yesterday morning and identified the body. Hobi claimed that Masud was a bus conductor on the Mirpur-Gulistan route. As Masud had no work for a couple of days, he went out of his house at Maddya Monipur at about 7:00pm on Sunday. Masud went to Commerce College area on National Zoo Road on a motorbike of one of his friends. After dropping him, his friend left the place, said Hobi. Police then caught Masud and shot him dead soon after, Hobi further said. Asad Miah, Masud's elder brother and a jhut trader, has been in jail for the last three years in an arms case. Hobi claimed that Asad's business rivals had Masud caught by police along with arms three years ago. Now these rivals have had him shot dead. But Anisur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Shah Ali Police Station, said the dead was an extortionist and was killed during a “shootout” between extortionists and the police. Locals said a plainclothes police team brought the youth to an under-construction building, Setu Bhaban, at Rainkhola Bakshnagar. The police team halted traffic on the road for a few minutes from around 7:45pm. Locals then heard gunfire sounds from the scene. At about 9:15pm, a police van was seen leaving the spot with the youth's body.
