Guilty cops must be punished

Nur Jahan, Chittagong
We are appalled by reading the report titled 'Sand traders, not mob, killed them' published in The Daily Star on March 26, 2012. It said that the six students who were killed at Amin Bazar on July 18, 2011, did not die from mob beating but by sand traders who staged a drama with the help of the police! It has been disclosed that on the advice of the police, criminals dragged the bodies of the youths half a kilometre away and called villagers announcing the young men as robbers and the frenzied mob started to beat the youths who were already dead. We just cannot believe it; it is like a horror story. Malek, one of the murderers, said that he filed a false robbery case as the officer-in-charge of Savar police station Mahbubur Rahman had forced him to do so. Could it be the role of a policeman who instead of arresting the culprits, made plan to save them? We wonder how much money has changed hands for this service. Police force is maintained by the taxpayers' money, to look after their security and welfare but a section of police have not only failed to do so, they are even doing harmful things so that people have become wary of them. To give exemplary punishment to the guilty policemen is very important, otherwise misdeeds committed by them will not come down and people's faith in police will erode.
