Jamaat leader Azhar, 6 others sent to jail
Jamaat-e-Islami acting Secretary General ATM Azharul Islam and six others were sent to jail yesterday in connection with two cases filed with Motijheel and Ramna police stations.
Metropolitan Magistrate Keshob Roy Chowdhury sent them to jail.
Earlier in the day, the court rejected a 30-day remand prayer in three cases filed with Paltan and Motijheel police stations on different dates in 2010 and 2011.
The cases were filed on charges of torching vehicles, assaulting policemen and preventing them from discharging their duties.
Keshob Roy passed the order after police produced them before the court on completion of their four-day remand in the cases.
They were shown arrested in eight cases on March 21 and remanded for four days following their re-arrest the previous day.
The six others who were shown arrested in eight cases following appeals submitted by the investigation officers are Abul Kashem, Ashrafuzzaman, Mohammad Redwan, Nasir Ullah, Abul Mannan and Asif Hossain.
Azhar and others were arrested on September 19 last year and were sued in five other cases filed with Ramna and Paltan police stations.
Later, they were granted bail in all the cases from the HC, until the DB re-arrested them on March 20.
Police arrested Azhar and others shortly after he walked out of Dhaka Central Jail on High Court's bail.
