JU students demand VC's resignation
A group of students yesterday urged the vice-chancellor (VC) of Jahangirnagar University (JU) to resign from his post for his 'failure' to ensure security of students.
They made the demand following attacks on three students separately by some activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) on Jahangirnagar University (JU) campus on Sunday.
They alleged that Vice-Chancellor Prof Shariff Enamul Kabir had been nurturing 'unruly' activities of BCL since he assumed the post.
The students under the banner of 'Shantrasher Biruddhay Jahangirnagar' brought out a procession on the campus protesting the attacks.
Two BCL activists Bipul and Rubel allegedly beat up Ariful Islam Aronno, an activist of Bangladesh Chhatra Union and also a third year student of government and politics department, as the victim was late in opening the door of his room on Sunday night.
The agitating students also alleged that the BCL activists beat up Mobasher Alam Sakkhor, a student of English department, and Alimul Raji Bidwuit, a student of government and politics department, over trivial matters on Sunday separately.
However, a BCL leader Sheikh Shariful Islam denied the allegations and said all the alleged attackers were not involved with the Chhatra League.
JU acting Proctor Sukallan Kundu said they would look into the matter and take steps if the allegations were proved.
Meanwhile, the agitating teachers observed their second day protest programme demanding the VC's resignation for his denial to meet the demands of the agitators.
They announced a fresh five-day protest programme on Saturday.
