Our Correspondent, Patuakhali
At least 58 Awami League (AL) men at newly formed Rangabali upazila in the district resigned yesterday, protesting, what they said, random extortion by local Jubo League men. Bipul Das, president of AL of ward no 1 of Rangabali union unit, vice-president of the unit Sabuj Mollah, joint secretary Kuddus Mia, publication secretary Babul Mia and other 42 general members of the unit placed their resignation letters before Ahsan Kabir Chan, president of Rangabali upazila AL at noon. Those who resigned from the party alleged that most leaders of upazila unit Jubo League, led by Duke Talukder, Babor Talukder and Rasel are extorting people, traders and organisations everywhere in the upazila for the last three years. On Thursday, the gang went to local water melon farmers in the area and demanded toll. When Bipul Das, president of AL of ward no 1 of Rangabali union unit along with some party leaders protested it, the extortionists physically assaulted them. Instantly the assaulted leaders decided to resign from the party and they placed their resignation letters yesterday, after three days of meeting. Bipul Das, president of local word AL, said, local people including farmers, fishermen are in grip of the said extortionists for long. They do not respect even the senior members of the party. So, we decided to resign from the party, Bipul added. Humayun Talukder, president of Rangabali upazila Jubo League refuting the allegations said, we are not involved in any kind of extortions. “We do not known whether the AL men resigned or not”, he said. Contacted, Ahsan Kabir Chan, president of Rangabali upazila AL, said a number of local AL men submitted their resignations to me yesterday. “We are going to take a decision on the issue soon”, Chan added.
