Assisting to Flee
Azad's friend on 2-day remand
Abul Kashem Azad, a friend of fugitive war crimes suspect Abul Kalam Azad, was placed on a two-day remand yesterday over a case filed for allegedly assisting the latter flee the country.
Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Hasibul Haque passed the order after Sub-Inspector (SI) Nizam Uddin of Uttarkhan Police Station, also the investigation officer of the case, produced Kashem before it.
Earlier on Tuesday, the same court remanded two sons and a brother-in-law of Abul Kalam Azad for two days over the assistance allegations. The four were arrested by Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) the same day.
SI Nizam, in his report yesterday, said Kashem was directly involved in allowing Abul Kalam Azad stay in his hotel and helping him flee the country.
Kashem, therefore, needs to be remanded so that vital clues about the incident and the whereabouts of another accused, Dr Yusuf, a retired National University teacher, can be known, he said.
Abul Kalam Azad, widely known as Bachchu Razakar, left Dhaka on March 30 and stayed at hotel Capila, owned by Kashem, at Hili Port. He then fled to India through the Hili border in Dinajpur on April 2, said Rab, quoting the detained sons.
The International Crimes Tribunal-2 issued an arrest warrant against Abul Kalam Azad on April 3 for allegedly committing crimes against humanity during the 1971 Liberation War.
Meanwhile our correspondent from Dinajpur reports: Police yesterday afternoon arrested Azizul Haque Munshi, 45, son of late Jamal Uddin of Basudevpur village under Hakimpur upazila from Hili Port over the assistance allegations.
