100 injured in clash over UP poll results

More than 100 people were injured in a clash between the supporters of two chairman candidates over the results of Durgapur Union Parishad polls in Mithapukur upazila last evening. The agitated people set fire to a local Awami League office and two BRTC buses and blockaded the Rangpur-Dhaka highway for hours till filling up this report at 9:00pm. Police and local sources said three candidates ran for chairman in the Durgapur Union Parishad election, which was held peacefully yesterday. In the evening, independent candidate Nur Bokt was unofficially declared as the chairman of Durgapur UP after counting of votes around 5:00pm. But soon afterwards, all on a sudden, Awami League candidate Robiul Islam Pramanik was declared the winner of the polls. Hearing the news, the agitated supporters of Nur Bokt took a protest procession towards the UNO office, where the supporters of AL candidate attacked them, triggering the clash. Police used batons and fired 50 rounds of tear gas shells to bring the situation under control.
