Driving schools needed

Saleh Ahmed Chowdhury, DOHS Mohakhali, Dhaka

There is acute shortage of trained and efficient drivers in the country. In Dhaka city alone some three hundred vehicles are added to the existing fleet every day. In keeping pace with this demand, the number of drivers is inadequate. Of course, there are a few private driving schools in Dhaka but they are not at all sufficient to cope with the growing demand. I suggest that the government should set up five to six driving schools under the directorate of youth development to train drivers in large numbers. Fee charged should be nominal to attract people. The government is providing huge subsidy to our schools, colleges and universities. A little subsidy on driving schools will create a lot of job opportunities at a nominal cost. I appeal to the Ministry of Youth and Sports to take urgent steps to set up a number of driving schools with a little investment in Dhaka and one each in every divisional headquarter to solve this acute problem. What is required is only a little imagination, planning and sincerity of purpose.
