Biman board holds meeting amid protests
Amid protests by staff and officials, the Board of Directors of Biman Bangladesh Airlines held a meeting at its head office in the capital last evening.
The three-hour meeting ended some time after 9:00pm.
Hundreds of pilots, officials, and employees of Biman masked in black clothes demonstrated before Balaka Bhaban demanding resignation of the chairman and the board of directors.
The protesters said the national flag carrier had incurred a loss of Tk 1,000 crore due to the competencies of the Biman chairman and its board of directors.
Moshiqur Rahman, convenor of Biman Bachao Oikya Parishad, alleged that the board meeting was convened all of a sudden.
"We did not opt for any violence. If we had gone for violent actions, the Biman would have been paralysed", he told The Daily Star last night.
Moshiqur said the Parishad would convey the matter to the civil aviation and tourism minister as he had assured the demonstrators of an amicable solution.
Around 50 police encircled the Balaka Bhaban to ensure security of the directors and barred the agitators from entering the compound.
On April 3, pilots and Biman staff announced a 48-hour strike from April 16 demanding resignation of the chairman and the board of directors.
They, however, called off the strike on April 10 after the civil aviation minister assured them of fulfilling their one-point demand.
