Bengali laziness….

It is amusing that, even in the apartments of the most luxurious flats, lifts have been installed whose numbers do not correspond to the floors so staff advise visitors in such words as, “Yes, her flat is on the 3rd floor, Madam, please press 4 in the lift!” I know that lifts are made in many countries, including those for whom the Ground Floor is Zero and the next floor is ONE, and those for whom the Ground Floor is ONE. However, the fact that this nation, with surely one of the highest proportion of clever people in it, does not have owners, architects and builders who can solve this little problem, surely merits a rebuke. I think I was right to grumble to my pupils, “What Bangladesh needs is an 'O' level in 'Teamwork'… Or it may be the notorious Bengali laziness. I note that your article on the suspicious containers at Chittagong port that should have been subject to random scanning did not receive it because those who should have done it 'found the process difficult and time-consuming'… Three cheers for the millions who keep the world turning because, they do not neglect the jobs that are 'difficult and time-consuming' - including, of course, bringing up children.
