Mosharraf gets bail
A Dhaka court yesterday granted bail to former health minister Khandker Mosharraf Hossain in a case filed against him on charge of amassing illegal wealth worth Tk 12.51 crore and concealing information about Tk 3.11 crore.
Judge (in charge) Borhan Uddin Ahmed of the Special Judge Court-8 issued the order after Mosharraf appeared before the court and sought bail in the case.
During hearing on the bail petition, advocate Masud Ahmed Talukder told the court that his client had earlier filed a writ petition with the High Court challenging legality of the case. After the hearing, the HC stayed the proceedings of the case on July 8, 2008 till disposal of the rule. The court also granted his client bail.
Meantime, the HC vacated the stay order imposed on the case proceedings on March 5 this year and asked his client to appear before the trial court within 60 days and seek bail in the case. His client appeared before the trial court and sought bail following the HC order, Masud added.
Shafiul Alam, assistant director of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), filed a case with Ramna Police Station on January 10, 2008 against Mosharraf and his wife Bilkis Akter Hossain for committing the offences.
Bilkis was charged with helping her husband in acquiring illegal wealth.
But, the investigation officer pressed charge against only Mosharraf and appealed to the court to discharge his wife as the charge brought against her was not proved. Later, the court relieved his wife of the charge.
