Maritime Boundary Victory
Civic reception for PM tomorrow
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will be accorded a civic reception tomorrow for the verdict Bangladesh won against Myanmar on the maritime boundary.
National Citizens' Committee to Celebrate Maritime Victory will organise the reception on the South Plaza of the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban at 5:00pm.
The committee leaders announced the programme at a press conference at Jatiya Press Club yesterday.
Bangladesh on March 14 won a verdict at the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS), which sustained its claim to 200-nautical-mile exclusive economic and territorial rights in the Bay of Bengal rejecting the claims of Myanmar.
The verdict gave Bangladesh a substantial share of the outer continental shelf beyond 200 miles and a full 12-mile territorial sea around St Martin's Island, overruling Myanmar's argument that the island be cut in half and shared.
As a result, Bangladesh established its sovereign rights over 1,11,631 square kilometers in the Bay of Bengal. Around 71 percent of Bangladesh, this area opened up huge opportunities for the extraction of oil, gas and marine resources, said the committee Co-chair Prof Qazi Kholiquzzaman Ahmad.
“This is a unique achievement for us. The prime minister demonstrated her strong leadership in attaining this historic victory,” he said.
The organising committee Chairman Prof Zillur Rahman Siddique, Co-chair Golam Kuddus and journalists Golam Sarwar and Iqbal Sobhan Chowdhury were also present.
