4 policemen hurt in attack, 5 held
Four policemen were injured in an attack by a group of people who were clashing with another group in Barodana area of Satkania upazila yesterday.
Police held five persons in connection with the attack.
The injured are Officer-in-Charge Khaled Hossain, Second Officer Murad Ullah Bahar, Constables Kanti Tripura, and Mohammed Farhad of Satkania Police Station.
During the founding anniversary celebration, two rival groups of Tiger Club at Barodona entered a clash, calling in a team of police to the scene around 11:30am.
As soon as police arrived, one group of members hid themselves, and about an hour later they starting pelted the policemen with stones from the hideouts.
Second Officer Murad Ullah Bahar said, “Following the attack, we fired five shots into the air to take control of the situation and launched a raid in the area arresting five of them”.
A case was lodged with Satkania Police Station against the attackers on charge of obstructing duties of police and attacking them, he said.
The arrestees are Omar Faruq, 18, Abdul Awal, 20, Abdul Hai, 22, Enamul Haq, 35 and Jahir Ahmad, 45, all residents of Barodona area.
OC Khaled said, “Members of the two rival groups of Tiger Club are involved in illegal works like drug peddling, arms trading and many anti-social activities”.
“A local chairman of the area, Ahmad, who was killed in a 'cross-fire' by Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) during the BNP tenure, founded the club, which is used as a hub for all kinds of illegal works”, he added.
“Now the club is the den of miscreants and cadres of all political parties. Locals are always scared of the activists of the club”.
