BNP, front body men sued in 24 cases
Some 24 cases were filed in Sylhet district against BNP, Jatiya Chhatra Dal and Juba Dal activists last week over violence centring the “disappearance” of BNP leader Ilias Ali on April 17.
Over 14,000 activists, including city BNP President MA Haque, were accused for vandalism, assaulting police and torching vehicles and property.
Sources alleged that many of the accused were common men having no connection to the violence.
So far, 120 people were arrested in connection to the cases while thousands of opposition activists went into hiding.
Moreover, officials concerned filed 18 complaints for the attack and vandalism on different government offices at Biswanath Upazila Complex on April 23.
Sylhet Metropolitan Police sources informed that eight cases were filed for vandalism and attack on police in the metropolitan areas during the April 22 and 23 hartals.
Of them, three cases were filed with Kotwali Police Station, three with Dakkhin Surma Police Station and one each in Jalalabad and Moglabazar police stations.
Meanwhile, three cases were filed with Bishwanath Police Station on April 23. Police filed two of the cases accusing 10,120 named and unnamed people, including Alonkari Upazila Parishad Chairman Lilu Mia.
The remaining one was filed by Bishwanath Upazila Nirbahi Officer Md Kamal Hossain against 3,000 people for attacking, vandalising and torching government offices at the upazila complex building that day.
In Habiganj district, seven cases were filed accusing 905 people. In Moulvibazar, six cases were filed against the opposition men.
