Students and teachers of Islamic history and culture department of Dhaka University demanded exemplary punishment to the members of in-laws' house of former DU student Farzana Noor Sukhi as they allegedly killed her on April 22. They placed the demand yesterday at a human chain programme at the Aparajeyo Bangla on the campus. Friends and relatives of Farzana alleged that she was tortured to death by her husband Bayezid Bustami and in-laws' family members due to giving birth to a girl child and her failure to meet their demand for dowry. Prof Dr Akhtaruzzaman, chairman of Islamic history and culture department, said Farzana's in-laws family members tortured her severely for dowry and giving birth to a baby girl adding that they even did not provide her with proper treatment. Demanding fair trial of the killing, Farzana's cousin Ashfaque Ahmed said: “We have to be conscious so that none can escape from punishment through the loopholes of law." Prof Dr Parveen Hasan and Mofizur Rahman, assistant professor of the department, among others, addressed the programme. Farzana took admission to DU in 2003-2004 sessions at Islamic history and culture department and secured first class in Master's examinations. She was a residential student of Kuwait-Moitri Hall of the university. Friends of Farzana told The Daily Star that they were on a 7-year affair before the marriage. Her husband is a lecturer of Barisal Govt Hatem Ali College and also a former student of DU, sources said.
