An electricity bill ombudsman needed
I echo the frustration of your correspondent with electricity bills that are both unacceptable and incomprehensible…
Moving from Dhanmondi to Gulshan in 2006 to an honourable DOHS landlord, I got electricity bills averaging about 2,400 monthly. When I moved to a new flat in Gulshan 2 built by a company that shall be nameless, with a sub-landlady, some bills were over 5000 or 6000 despite identical gadgets and usage. I visited the nearby HQ of the company 6 times, (about this and other problems) - and discovered how helpless tenants are in the face of such injustices. The landlady installed a separate metre, the bills plummeted and then rose again. Was it my foreigner's name?
My housekeeper and I got everything else working beautifully and my landlady then asked me to leave as she wanted to live in the flat herself. I advertised in your pages, sir, stating what I would pay for rent and electricity combined - and found a lovely flat at a reasonable price. I now need to 'shift' locally by July and will be advertising in like manner and wonder if I will again be fortunate.
An electricity bill ombudsman? Yes, please - with teeth!
