Here are some comments that came in response to Sunday's The Daily Star news report headlined “Hartal again” Truth Teller
All political parties must stop these nonsensical activities. Shakhawat
This is not the first series of hartal in Bangladesh. There was never a better reason for hartal. All of us feel insecure. Manzoor Ashraf
BNP and all other opposition parties in Bangladesh must be united to save those kidnapped victims. Sellma
I am usually against all sorts of strikes but in this case we have to act fast. So let us make these hartals a success remaining non-violent and let us save the lives of the kidnapped victims. Saleh Mohammad Ayub
Please bring an end to all these dirty politics of disappearance, assassination and so on and so forth. Please usher in a new era of constructive politics where politicians would work for the welfare of the nation, making our independence meaningful. It has already been 40 years into independence; please say good-bye to your ignominious past! Freeman
Hartal doers, you know very well that hartal is a destructive way of protest which punishes only poor people. The rich people are not affected by hartal. Faraha
I was sitting for my honours final examinations at Dhaka University in 1996. We had five papers and it took six months to complete those five papers. It was because of the successive hartals called by the Awami League for caretaker government. So this is not new in our country. Kazi Salim
Hartal will not bring any fruitful result. Since the government is trying to find him out and investigation is going on with several search operations around the country, BNP should help the government and the police to trace him out. Ilias has been very much known since his student life in the University of Dhaka as a JCD activist. Apart from that, he had rivalry with the then finance minister and other groups within BNP. The issue has become very complicated now. Anarchism and vandalism will only create hindrances in finding Ilias Ali. Harun Rashid
This hartal is totally unacceptable. Why couldn't BNP find out an alternate way to protest Ilias Ali's disappearance? Why don't they care about the country's economic loss or interruption in the HSC examinations? It is true that calling hartal is their democratic right but they should also know that its excess use is tantamount to abuse of that right. Russell Talukder
Why doesn't BNP prove first that the abduction has not been done by some of Ilias' own rivals? How is BNP so sure that the government knows the whereabouts of Ilias Ali? They should clarify it to the people. Calling hartal again will not bring any result for BNP if the government really didn't have any role in the abduction. Upfront
I have full sympathy for the family of Ilias Ali and his driver and want them to be discovered as quickly as possible. I fail to recognise this Bangladesh where politics is playing a destabilising role for the state and has failed to produce any quality patriotic leadership to uphold democratic norms.
