Missing of Ilias Ali
Avoid making 'sweeping remarks' on probe, Dr Kamal urges govt
Gano Forum President Dr Kamal Hossain yesterday called upon the government to refrain from making any “sweeping remarks” on the current investigation into the “disappearance” of BNP leader Ilias Ali and his driver on April 17.
Addressing a press conference at his Bailey Road residence in the capital, he expressed grave concern over the “disappearance” and some recent incidents, including the murder of journalist couple Sagar-Runi.
Any remarks by the state executives which might impede the investigation process are not desirable. “Besides, it also puts unwarranted pressure on the investigation officers digging out the facts,” he said.
On the investigation into the “disappearance”, he said everybody hopes that the investigation will be quickly and successfully completed.
Dr Kamal said the government should disclose the progress reports on all the recent killings and incidents of enforced disappearances to let the countrymen know the outcome from time to time.
“Law and order situation centring Ilias Ali's disappearance is gradually deteriorating. Neutrality of the law is being hampered due to political interference… the country is being deprived of the rule of law,” he said.
On hartals, Dr Kamal said there are alternatives to such forms of protests. “Time has come to bring changes in the political culture. It is everyone's duty to ensure security of public life and property.”
He said the government would fail to perform its constitutional duties if it can not provide security to public life and property.
On whether there is a possibility of another 1/11, Dr Kamal said the government still has 18 months' time and people will judge the government's rights and wrongs.
Criticising political clashes in educational institutions and the practice of politicisation all around, he said there is an urgent need for democratic reforms within the political parties for the country's wellbeing.
