The International Republican Institute (IRI), a non-partisan US-based organisation, has declared women diplomat Nasim Firdaus as its "Democracy's Hero." Firdaus has been given the honour for her contribution to advocating women's empowerment and advancing women leadership in Banglades, says a press release. In 2008, she established Bangladesh Alliance for Women Leadership (BDAWL) which published the first ever directory of Bangladeshi women leaders titled "Who's Who: Women Leaders at a Glance." in 2010. Firdaus also launched the Women's Democracy Network (WDN) Bangladesh Country Chapter in September 2011. She is now imparting training on women's leadership at WDN's Women's Leadership School Initiative in Bangladesh. Nasim Firdaus was the country's first female diplomat in the foreign affairs cadre passing Bangladesh's first-ever civil service exam in 1977.
