Jahangirnagar University, the only residential university in the country, is endowed with rich biodiversity. Many animals and plants species are found here in the campus. But the commercial mentality of the JU administration is destroying this biodiversity. JU is known for the migratory birds. But only a few migratory birds came here last winter. There are 13 lakes in the campus which used to be the main habitat of the migratory birds coming from the cold regions. But most of them are now being used for commercial purposes, which is one of the major reasons why migratory birds are not coming here. The university authorities have leased the lakes to businessmen who are using various chemicals for fish cultivation and thus destroying the atmosphere which attracts the guest birds. Besides, the authorities have cut down many trees in different parts of the campus which were the habitat of butterflies and other wild animals. The university authorities are continuing these harmful activities in spite of the protests by students and teachers. We urge the government and the university authorities to give attention to these important issues and stop leasing the lakes or cutting trees any more.
