Tell the truth
In the last budget the government made a forecast that growth rate in the current fiscal year will be seven percent. But despite favourable weather, good harvest, and huge collection by NBR, this is not going to be achieved. As per the latest estimate by ADB, our growth rate is about 6.2%. ADB estimate is free from political bias. So this is considered to be more reliable than Bangladesh government's estimate.
The reason why we broke away from Pakistan is that we thought we could move faster than Pakistan economically. Our politicians gave us the impression that Bangladesh would be much more prosperous once it would become independent.
But now we find that per capita income of Pakistan is much higher than that of Bangladesh despite all their internal and external problems.
So my earnest request to all our leaders and politicians is to tell public the truth and not to make promises which they can't honour. Before the last general election, the AL-led grand alliance made promises like bringing down the prices of essentials within the buying power of the people. But what we are witnessing is galloping inflation and consequent frustration and untold suffering of the people. Our leaders are so self-centered that they can't think of anything but money and power. I wonder how many decades will it take for us to get rid of the greedy politicians.
