HR boss questions PM's ratings in Gallup poll

Staff Correspondent
National Human Rights Commission Chairman Dr Mizanur Rahman yesterday questioned the credibility of the Gallup poll which said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina had an approval rating of 77 percent. “How this information was published based on a Gallup poll remains a question. Many believe that the government got it done by managing Gallup,” he said. Mizanur was addressing a seminar, “Freedom and liability of information”, organised by abnews24.com, a new online-based news agency, at Jatiya Press Club in the capital marking its inauguration. Washington-based Gallup is a company widely known for predicting US election results and conducting the US presidents' approval ratings. The survey report, released on May 11, ranked Sheikh Hasina seventh in its survey on job approval of leadership, conducted in 21 countries of Asia and the Pacific Rim in 2011. Chief Information Commissioner Muhammad Zamir, addressing as chief guest, said the commission has many limitations, like the absence of a provision in the Right to Information Act 2009 making it obligatory for corporations to provide information. Information Commissioner Dr Sadeka Halim, Saarc Chamber of Commerce and Industry President Annisul Huq and Information Secretary Hedayet Ullah Al Mamun also spoke at the seminar.
