Assault on AC Land
HC asks IGP to suspend Feni OC
The High Court yesterday directed the inspector general of police (IGP) to immediately suspend officer-in-charge of Feni Sadar Police Station Nazim Uddin on charge of assaulting an assistant commissioner (AC) (land) of Feni.
Some plainclothes police led by Nazim reportedly assaulted AC (land) Nazrul Islam, and surveyor Khademul Islam while they were evicting illegal structures before the police station on May 3.
During hearing a rule, the court also directed the cabinet secretary to form a three-member committee, led by the law secretary, to probe the incident and submit its report before it within two months.
The HC bench of Justice AHM Shamsuddin Chowdhury Manik and Justice Jahangir Hossain Selim also fixed July 10 for further order on the incident.
OC Nazim and three sub-inspectors--Saiful Islam, Mahfuz and Haqqani--have to appear before the court July 10.
They also appeared before the court yesterday as per its May 7 order.
AC (land) Nazrul Islam yesterday burst into tears while narrating before the bench about the police attack on him during their official duty before the police station.
Deputy Attorney General ABM Altaf Hossain told The Daily Star that he has already informed the IGP about the HC order for suspending OC Nazim Uddin.
Following a writ petition moved by Manzill Murshid on behalf of Human Rights and Peace for Bangladesh, the HC bench on May 7 summoned the OC and the three sub inspectors yesterday to know their roles over the incident.
Advocate Yusuf Hossain Humayun and Advocate Abdul Matin Khasru appeared for the police officials.
