Fakhrul, 24 other leaders get bail

The High Court yesterday granted anticipatory bail to BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and 24 other opposition leaders and activists in a bomb-blast case until the submission of the charge sheet. The case was filed with Shahbagh Police Station against 28 leaders and activists of the 18-party alliance in connection with two bomb explosions at the Secretariat during hartal hours on April 29. Among the accused, 25 secured bail as they appeared before an HC bench yesterday with bail petitions. The three other accused are now in jail custody. Earlier on May 7, two HC judges delivered dissenting orders on their bail petitions, compelling the chief justice to send the petitions to a third bench. The third HC bench of Justice Mohammad Anwarul Haque passed the order yesterday. During the hearing on the petitions, defence lawyer Moudud Ahmed told the court that the government had filed the case to destroy the opposition party. He said his clients had been implicated in the case as accomplices but the names of the people who had exploded the bombs were not mentioned in the complaint. Additional Attorney General MK Rahman opposed the bail prayers, saying the court could not grant the petitioners bail since there were specific allegations against them. Earlier on May 13, the same HC bench ordered the opposition leaders and activists to surrender before the lower court by May 16 in another case filed for torching a vehicle near the Prime Minister's Office during April 29 hartal. The accused leaders who appeared before the HC yesterday include Mirza Fakhrul, BNP leaders Khandker Mosharraf Hossain, Sadeque Hossain Khoka, Gayeshwar Chandra Roy and Aman Ullah Aman.
