Land Grabbing
BCL men face two cases
Some current and former leaders and workers of Bangladesh Chhatra League were accused in two cases filed yesterday over their involvement in attempted land grabbing and carrying arms during Monday's clashes, which left 30 people injured in the sadar upazila's Chhalia village.
The Chhatra League leaders, however, claimed that their members were not involved in the incidents.
Mahmud Hossain, a concerned landowner, filed a case with Airport Police Station accusing 24 named and 150 unnamed persons for Monday's bid to occupy his two-acre land. He has been legally in possession of the land for more than half a century, he said.
The accused include 22 arrestees and Abdul Mukit alias Muku Miah, who claimed the land and allegedly hired a group of Chhatra League men to grab it, former BCL leader Pijush Kanti Dey, Madan Mohan College BCL president Arun Devnath Sagar, and former BCL activist Faruque Ahmed alias Kala Faruque.
A judicial magistrate sent the arrestees to jail custody yesterday.
Another case was filed by police with the same police station. The 26 men, who were made accused, are charged with carrying illegal and unauthorised arms.
On Monday, villagers clashed with a huge group of men, who were allegedly Chhatra League men and arrived at the village on 30 motorbikes, two microbuses, one truck and one pickup van. Police recovered five guns from the spot.
Yesterday BCL leaders from Sylhet district and city units at a press conference at Sylhet Press Club denied BCL members' involvement in the land grabbing.
