6 female Hijbut activists held
Police arrested six female activists of fundamentalist organisation Hijbut Tawhid at Adhuna village of the district's Gournadi upazila yesterday.
Police also seized 39 copies of books named 'Allahar Mozeza,' 'Moha Satter Ahoban,' 'Hijbut Tawhider Lakkho O Uddesso' and 'Zihad, Ketal O Santrash', all written by Hijbut Tawhid Chief Bayzid Khan Ponni of Karatia, from the activists' possession.
The activists engaged in propagating alleged misinterpretation of Islamic ideology and announced that over the loudspeaker of a local mosque in Adhuna village, agitating the villagers, said Sub-Inspector Shahjahan Khalifa, in-charge of Sharikal police camp of Gournadi Police Station.
The villagers detained the six females and informed the police camp.
Police rescued the females and handed them over to Gournadi Police Station along with the recovered propagation items, including the 39 books, 50 propagation leaflets and four VCD.
Officer-in-Charge Abul Kalam of Gournadi Police Station said the women were produced before the court yesterday that sent them to jail.
The arrestees were identified as Bokul Begum, 50, wife of Hijbut Tawhid regional Ameer Mannan Mir; Shahnaz, 45, wife of Alamgir Hossain of Shahjira village; Amena Akter, 17, daughter of Harunor Rashid of Timir Kathi village and class X student of Timirkathi School in Nalcity upazila of Jhalakathi; Bithi Akhter, 16, daughter of Abbasuddin Bepari and class X student of Agorpur Altaf Memorial School; Mahinur Begum, 38, wife of Mofser Ali Khan; and Nazmunnahar Bithi, 15, daughter of Mobarak Howladar of Sakokathi village and class IX student of Agorpur Altaf Memorial School in Gournadi upazila of Barisal.
