Evil forces behind missing of Ilias Ali, say AL leaders

Speakers at a citizens' condolence rally in Sylhet yesterday said late Awami League leader Iftekhar Hossain Shamim had served the common men throughout his life. The valiant freedom fighter was sincere and devoted in all his activities, both in politics or social activities. Shamim, the district AL vice-president, also a social activist, met his tragic end in a road accident on Dhaka-Sylhet Highway at Osmaninagar Police Station area on May 11 at the age of 65. Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid said Shamim had always played a positive role in local politics. Addressing the rally as the chief guest, Finance Minister AMA Muhith, also lawmaker from Sylhet Sadar, said the existing highways will be widened to lessen the number of road accidents. The existing 2-lane roads would be made 4-lane and the 4-lane ones would be made 6-lane, he said. Meanwhile, minister without portfolio Suranjit Sengupta said 'disappearnace' of Ilias Ali has created a vacuum in the nation's politics and that some unknown forces are working behind such incidents. “We need to see who would be benefited from Ilias's disappearance - the grand alliance or the other alliance,” Suranjit questioned. Unknown evil forces are actively trying to create 'trouble and mistrust' between the two major political parties and instability in the mainstream politics for making the country a failed state. He called for discussion between the political groups to ease down the current troubled situation. AL Joint General Secretary Mahbubul Alam Hanif also called for unity between the political parties over the issue of the trial of war criminals. Sylhet city Mayor Badar Uddin Ahmed Kamran, also the city AL chief , announced that the city's court point area would be named 'Shamim Point' as a mark of respect to the late politician. The mayor chaired the rally at the city's Registry Maidan while AL district President Abduj Jahir Chowdhury Sufian and central Organising Secretary Misbah Uddin Siraj, Sylhet Chamber President Faruque Ahmed Misbah, Press Club President Ahmed Nur, Workers' Party member Sikondar Ali, Samyabadi Dal member Dhiren Sinha, Ganotantrik Party member Barrister Arosh Ali, JSD member Lokman Ahmed, CPB member Bedananmda Bhhattacharya, and lawmakers MA Mannan, Mahmud-us-Samad Chowdhury, Shofiqur Rahman Chowdhury and Syeda Zebunnesa Haque also spoke among others.
