Ex-UP member killed over land dispute

A former union parishad (UP) member was allegedly beaten to death over a land dispute at Sitakunda Upazila in Chittagong on Thursday. The deceased was Oli Ahmed alias Boli Member, 60, of the upazila's Moddhom Mohadebpur. Sub-Inspector (SI) Golam Mostofa of Sitakunda Police Station said Oli gave a Guava orchard on lease to Ashok Chakrabarty alias Barun, 35, of the same area. The duo had a dispute over payment of the lease money. To resolve the matter, they sat on an arbitration meeting in the presence of some respectable locals at Gozaria Dighir Phar around 8:00pm on Thursday. However, at one stage, Ashok assaulted Oli with a piece of charcoal from a nearby shop, the SI said, quoting eyewitnesses. Oli's relatives rushed him to Sitakunda Upazila Health complex where doctors declared him dead. The deceased's son Md Jahid filed a murder case against Ashok in this regard with Sitakunda Police Station. Police arrested his brother Dilip Chakrabarty.
