Release BNP leaders

Pro-BNP teachers of Rajshahi University (RU) yesterday demanded immediate release of the opposition party's acting Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and other central leaders. More than a hundred teachers, under the banner 'Nationalist Teachers Forum,' made the demand at a human chain programme in front of the university senate building on the campus around 10:00am. Speakers at the programme said, while the opposition goes on a democratic movement against the irregularities and corruption of the government, police sue the opposition leaders. Condemning the government for repressing the opposition, the speakers said, many cases were being filed against the BNP leaders and workers with a motive to politically harass them. They alleged that the government was committing crimes one after another in the country. They urged the government to withdraw the cases filed against the opposition leaders, terming the allegations brought against the leaders fabricated They also asked the government to refrain from repressing the opposition parties and return to democracy. Pro-BNP teachers Prof M Azhar Ali, Prof Afruzzaman Khan Choudhury, Prof Fazlul Haque, former RU VC Prof Mamnunul Keramat, Prof Rafiqul Islam, Prof Shamshul Alam Sarker, Dr Azhar Ali, Prof Abdur Rahman Siddique, Prof Zillur Rahman, Prof Ruhul Amin and Prof Habibur Rahman also addressed the programme.
