Ensure congenial atmosphere at varsities, Zillur urges UGC

President Zillur Rahman yesterday urged all concerned to ensure a congenial atmosphere of education along with enhancing quality of higher education at the country's public and private universities. He made the call when a delegation of the University Grants Commission (UGC), led by its Chairman Prof Dr AK Azad Chowdhury, called on him at Bangabhaban to submit the commission's annual report. The UGC delegation includes its members Prof Dr Atful Hye Shibly, Dr Mohammad Mohibur Rahman, Prof Dr Mohammad Mahabbat Khan, Prof Dr Abul Kashem and Prof Dr Md Akhtar Hossain. While submitting the report, Prof Azad said the commission had relentlessly been working to ensure supreme standard of tertiary education at all universities. He told the president that some 16 private universities had set up their permanent campuses to date. He apprised Zillur that Bangladesh had secured the fourth place across the world in terms of the number of students pursuing higher education. The UGC chairman drew the attention of the president, also chancellor of universities, to the issue of special honoraria for the vice-chancellors (VCs) of the universities. The president assured the delegation of his all-out support for development of the higher education. COSMOPOLITAN CLUB Meanwhile, a four-member delegation of Baridhara Cosmopolitan Club Limited, led by its chairman M Shamsul Alam, met the president at Bangabhaban. During the meeting, the president said the Cosmopolitan Club, imbedded with modern facilities, can play an important role as foreign missions are situated in Baridhara area. Zillur urged the leaders of the club to extend their social welfare activities and mentioned that massive interactions between officials of the missions and local elites could be increased through the club.
