24-hr ultimatum to govt to remove OC
Journalist leaders at a human chain programme yesterday warned the government of waging tough movement if it does not remove officer-in-charge (OC) of Dhanmondi Police Station Moniruzzaman within 24 hours.
The journalist leaders at the programme alleged that OC Mohammad Moniruzzaman ordered his fellows to open fire on journalists when they rushed to Dhanmondi to see Bibhas Chandra Saha, chief crime reporter of The Independent, after his death in a road accident there on May 11.
Journalists from different media houses formed the human chain in front of the Dhaka Reporters' Unity (DRU). They also demanded punishment to the bus driver, provision of compensation to the deceased's family and ensuring security of journalists at workplaces.
Journalists will hold a protest rally before the Jatiya Press Club under the banner of Crime Reporters Association of Bangladesh (CRAB) around 12:00noon today.
CRAB President Akhteruzzaman Lavlu said, "The probe committee formed by police high-ups to probe into the OC's activities following the road accident has found Moniruzzaman's non-professional activities but he is not punished yet."
The media men also blamed the communications and shipping ministers for their failure to provide commuters with safe roads and waterways.
"I don't see any difference between killing people under vehicles and shooting them to death. Our shipping minister is apparently legalising killing people under wheels by standing beside the killer drivers," said former general secretary of CRAB Abu Saleh Akon.
