Five killed, 14 hurt in road crashes

Five people were killed and 14 others injured in separate road accidents in Faridpur, Jhenidah, Brahmanbaria and Kurigram on Sunday and yesterday. Our Faridpur correspondent reports: Two people were killed as a truck fell into a ditch beside Dhaka-Barisal highway near Moshal village in Nagarkanda upazila yesterday. The victims were Atiar Hossain, 30, and Ashraf Ali, 35. They died at Faridpur Medical College Hospital on arrival. In Jhenidah, retired school teacher Hazi Rahmat Ali Sachchu, 60, was killed instantly and 10 others were injured when a truck hit a tempo from the opposite direction on Kushtia-Jhenidah highway near the district cadet college yesterday. Five of the injured were Shahjahan Ali, Razu Ahmed, Ariful Islam, Monirul Islam and Pikul Sheikh. In Brahmanbaria, Basona Begum, 55, died and four others were injured as a truck rammed a CNG-run auto-rickshaw from the opposite direction on Brahmanbaria- Akhaura road at Alakpur village in the sadar upazila on Sunday night. Injured Dulal Mia, 18, the auto-rickshaw driver, Rafique Raja, 65, Basona's husband, Kamal Uddin, 39, and Gulam Hakkani, 19, the auto-rickshaw passengers, were admitted to Brahmanbaria Sadar Hospital. In Kurigram, Oftar Ali, 75, was killed when a bus hit him on Bhurungamari-Kurigram road near Bepari Haat in Nageswari upazila yesterday morning.
