NU students want bigger edn budget

Our Correspondent, Ctg
The National University (NU) students of Chittagong yesterday demanded an increase in the education budget for the improvement of the academic quality of 13 lakh NU students across the country. They also requested government's initiatives to remove the crippling session jams in NU, where, they said, classes were held only 88 days instead of 210 days throughout an academic year, eventually creating session jams. These are on a seven-point demand, with which the students formed a human chain at Chittagong Press Club premises under the banner of “Students of National University”. The students also brought to the fore the problems evolving around uniform question papers of honours and master's examinations and varying lessons delivered at colleges under NU. In this regard, they suggested that the education ministry authorise a college in Chittagong so that it could function as a divisional unit of National University to bring conformity. Their other demands are recruitment of sufficient number of teachers, publishing results of after three months of the exams to eliminate session jams, providing students with accommodation, and ensuring 50 percent transport fare concession for them. Convener of the human chain, Dipa Barua, along with other student representatives, including Mohammed Jahed, Srabanti Chakma and Samir Mallik, also spoke at the programme. Later, the students paraded from the press club to Cheragi Pahar circle. Demanding special budgetary allocation for NU, “Students of National University” will submit a memorandum to the finance minister on June 03.
