Abolish corporal punishment from schools

When I read newspaper reports describing the wickedness and evil that still exist in the Bangladeshi school system, I feel great shame to be a Bangladeshi and a member of the same profession. During my teaching career of 22 years, I have never used corporal punishment on a child and I always feel ashamed whenever I read those 'horror stories' of corporal punishment in schools. One such news was published in the newspapers recently where a female teacher at Talimul Quran Mahila Madrasa at Namashyampur seared the legs of the girls with a hot spatula! When I read the write-ups by Sir Frank Peters, I remember my father who was a highly respected schoolteacher. He never hit his children at home or at school. He shared the beliefs of Sir Frank Peters that “Corporal punishment beats-in: fear, hatred, violence, disrespect, resentment and vengeance. It compresses, represses, and like a time bomb explodes when people least expect it and are unprepared. We sow what we reap.” There are many schoolteachers who think like me and deep down I know corporal punishment will be ultimately abolished from our schools. Corporal punishment brings nothing but disgrace.
