ACC to charge 15 CDA engineers, 17 contractors soon

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has finalised 15 charge sheets against 15 officials of Chittagong Development Authority (CDA) and 17 contractors in corruption cases on Sunday. ACC sources said they would submit the charge sheets to the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court of Chittagong within two or three days. Fifteen charge sheets show about Tk 70 lakh embezzlement by the CDA officials and contractors. ACC filed 22 cases against them in Chadgaon Police Station on September 5, 2010 on charges of corruption using development work of Bahadderhat to Kalurghat road in the port city. Fakhrul Islam, deputy assistant director of ACC, Chittagong and one of the plaintiffs of the case, told The Daily Star that their investigation found that the CDA officials and contractors embezzled Tk 70 lakh from the development work by showing excess and fake expenditures. The CDA officials are: former CDA chief engineer Iqbal Hossain Mozumder, former superintendent engineer Nur Hossain Chowdhury and executive engineers Nurul Amin Bhuiyan, Sahabuddin Khaled, Monjur Hasan, Asraful Islam, AAM Habibur Rahman, Nurul Alam and assistant engineers Ilias Akhter, Mohammad Ilias, Rajib Das, Mohammad Hasan and deputy assistant engineers Osaman Sikder, Hamidul Haque and estimator Rupam Kumar Chowdhury. The contractors are Nur Mohammad, Khaled Bin Alam, Jahangir Alam, Nejam Uddin, Yunus Goni Chowdhury, Wahiduzzaman, Abdus Salam, K M Jashim Uddin, Mohammad Aman, Rafiqual Islam, Yakub Chowdhury, Nasir Uddin, Sayed Mohammad Jahirul Haque, Mohammad Masud, Abdus Salam and Shamsul Alam. Abdus Salam, CDA chairman, said he would take necessary action as per government rules. Yusuf Goni Chowdhury, also a board member of CDA and accused in the cases, said he was not involved in any corruption. During the investigation, he was with the ACC team and they could not find his any corruption, said Goni.
